Diggy Simmons returns to music with new single, “It Is What It”.
“What you mad at? This a glad rap,” spits Simmons.
In 3 minutes, Simmons’ bounces bars about triumph, surrender and faith in what’s written off a minimalist track carried by strings and gospel harmonies. So, it’s only appropriate that the Emmanuel Afolabi directed video highlights the 23-year-old-rapper in a church surrounded by a casually dressed choir and expressive dancers. Then lake front with arms stretched open in receipt of the higher’s offering.
It’s been 6 years since Simmons has released a musical project. He cites fear for the delay.
“I haven’t released a music project in 6 years. All due to overthinking my ideas, my OCD, being too invested in the unknown and the fear of an uncertain outcome,” he tweets.
“For years, I let my irrationalities and the negative perceptions of others overcome what I perceived of myself. Wanting control over everything that happens in one’s life and picking apart everything about you can greatly cripple growth,” he shares on Instagram. “Life is imperfect, and imperfection is what creates greatness. Although this is still a learning process (a strenuous one, that is definitely not linear), I am accepting that it’s cool if I fuck up and not everything has to be perfect.”
Teachings of revere for public perception partnered with unlimited access to social networks has stunted the development of self for the latter half of the millennial generation. So, it’s humbling that Simmons’ journey to confidence, calling and action is one that’s been crippled by comparison. Thankfully, the young talent has turned down the outside noise and is trusting in himself.
